Bachelor of Science in Business Studies with Banking and Finance, Loughborough University
In today’s turbo-charged world, keeping up with a fast-paced society often means longer work hours and lesser personal time. Having spent a rigorous three years as a full time working professional and a part time student, Priyanka John is no stranger to all these and more. In fact, one could say that the key ingredient in the 26-year-old’s recipe to success is sacrifice.
As an undergraduate pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Studies with Banking and Finance, the notion of what many colloquially term as “me-time” did not exist in Priyanka’s vocabulary. Instead, she exercised discipline almost to a fault. As a result of her efforts and dedication, the Indian national topped her cohort in her second year of university at PSB Academy, and even flew to the Loughborough University in the United Kingdom to attend her convocation ceremony.
While her story of hard work eventually met with the proverbial happy ending, Priyanka initially harboured a series of concerns towards the prospect of going back in time to tertiary life. Right on top of her long list of considerations was the need for flexible hours. As a finance officer at the National University of Singapore, it was important to Priyanka that she was able to toggle between a working professional and a conscientious student seamlessly. For this very reason, the part-time degree programme presented itself as an almost divine opportunity because it allowed her to do retain her job while still working towards a better version of herself.
Priyanka’s pursuit of higher education was more than just a personal upgrade. It was the key to building a successful career. With 18 modules stretched across a span of three years, a priority of the Bachelor of Science in Business Studies with Banking and Finance is to integrate the daily work experiences of students into their learning environment. According to Priyanka, the degree programme delivered on this very promise through providing her with skills and knowledge transferrable to her workplace.
Her time spent in the academy had not only equipped her with academic proficiency in the areas of business and finance, but also served to arm her with softer people skills. Working shoulder to shoulder with course mates from all across the globe, the driven individual was able to cultivate a keen sense of situational adaption and cross-cultural understanding. In learning more about her peers, Priyanka was also able to develop a greater sense of self-awareness.
Outside of the classroom, Priyanka also tapped on PSB Academy’s alumni network to leverage upon opportunities for networking and interaction with fellow graduates. She is an avid advocate of good relations within the alumni community as she believes that these strong ties will be advantageous for undergraduates, graduates and the institution alike.
In retrospect, Priyanka attributes her source of motivation to her family, her closest friends and classmates, as well as her fiancé. She also looks fondly upon her lecturers, who were always ready to set aside time for consultations even after scheduled lessons. This solid support system served to add another layer of gratification to her experience at the institution, the sum of which is a “lifetime achievement” for her.
As the pages turn to another chapter of Priyanka’s life, she shares that her biggest takeaway in the three-year journey is the importance of time management. She says, “Time Management is very important skill that can be achieved through continuous practice. I have a fixed schedule for each and every particular week. This include time set aside for studies, work, leisure, cultural activities and church. It is all about your passion so no matter what, don’t give up your studies because it adds so much value to this lifetime. Establish a proper routine and do your best to follow it.”
