Studying with fellow working adults had its challenges, especially for group projects and discussions. Learning to accept different opinions on HR issues and accommodating conflicting schedules were part and parcel of group work. Nonetheless, these helped train Elvin Goh in acknowledging differences and accommodating the best of team members - particularly useful in his career in the food and beverage industry and later as a Group HR Manager.
Tell us about your work and why you chose to do a Diploma at PSB Academy.
I am currently working as Group HR Manager for the Suki Group of Companies, a multi-brand organization, managing business entities such as Sakura International Buffet, Nihon Mura Express, Momiji Japanese Buffet Restaurant, etc.
I decided early on that the food and beverage industry is where my passion lies, thanks to my love for food. I started working as a waiter in the hospitality industry, then progressed to become a supervisor and eventually an Operations cum Business Development Manager in a local F&B establishment.
This last stint as an Operations & Business Development Manager for a couple of years made me realize my potential in contributing ideas in the area of attracting potential recruits and retaining staff. I believe that well-crafted HR policies and favourable remuneration can go a long way in impacting employees. Thus, I decided to take up an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management at PSB Academy.
How has the Advanced Diploma benefitted you?
I was thankful I chose to upgrade myself as this qualification opened new doors for me into the HR field. It gave me a good start as the course equipped me with knowledge and skills relevant to me in this new field of profession. I was able to tap on my learning to apply to my day-to-day work.
What were some of the challenges you encountered pursuing this course alongside your work?
My class consisted of mainly working adults in different industries who had different opinions on HR issues. It was not easy deriving at a common point when it came to group discussion. Also, each of us had different schedule commitment which made it challenging to arrange out-of-class meetings.
Gradually, we acknowledged our differences in opinions and made an effort to reach a fair consensus, taking the best of one another’s input. It also helped that we had a common objective - to achieve good grades. With the chemistry cultivated over time, we respect the best opinions and did not take disagreement personally!
