Thinking of why you should study for a degree?

1. A degree qualification enhances your employability
Did you know that a degree qualification is becoming the norm? Degree holders comprised 37% of Singapore’s labour force in 2018, as compared to 26% in 2008%1. What’s more, the projects, group work, and critical thinking that you’ll engage in during your studies provide you with opportunities to build up your soft skills, which have been found to be valued as much as—and sometimes even more so than—hard skills during the hiring process2.
That’s not all! PSB Academy’s overseas university partners are amongst the best in their home countries and internationally. You’ll get to choose from universities such as The University of Newcastle, Australia (10th in Australia3) and Coventry University (15th in the UK4 and UK’s top modern university for 7 consecutive years5).
2. Your lifetime earning potential will see an increase
In a report published by the Ministry of Finance6, it was discovered that 44% of those born in the 1970s have university degrees as compared to 21% of those born in the 1960s. From the report, MOF found that “with higher qualifications, younger Singaporeans are better able to find jobs, earn higher wages, and save more for retirement.”
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that 86% of the world’s billionaires featuring in Forbes’ Top 100 (between 1996-2016) have higher education qualifications7?
3. A degree also opens the doors to more opportunities
A degree is necessary to pursue careers in specific fields like physiotherapy and nutrition, with some careers even requiring postgraduate education.
Want to stand out from your peers by leveraging industry partnerships and accreditation? Attain on-campus degree professional accreditation from the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) with the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering awarded by Coventry University.
Industry partnerships are also available at PSB Academy for various other disciplines such as logistics and supply chain management, accounting and finance, as well as media and communications.
You’ll also require a bachelor’s degree to pursue an MBA, PhD, or a Master’s degree in the future. While you might not be sure if you’ll explore further education just yet, it never hurts to keep your options open!
4. You’ll be better prepared for the workforce
There is a wealth of resources made available to undergraduates to help them excel! Our Career Services & Engagement Team, for example, organises regular events and activities to help students ace their job interviews and become career ready. These include personal development workshops, career clinics, as well as annual career fairs.
We also work closely with industry partners to provide our students with key industry insights via industry visits and talks. You’ll also get the chance to tap on the expertise of our alumni through our Mentoring Programme. They’ll share with you useful information about how to transition from student life into the working world, personal insights they’ve gained from their own working experiences, and more!
5. Study what you love, while meeting new people along the way
Half the fun of university lies in meeting people from different backgrounds: PSB Academy has a diverse student population and your classmates could come from countries like Indonesia, Laos, China and South Korea! You’ll not only form lifelong friendships, but also gain new cultural perspectives and improved communication skills in the process. These skills will be extremely useful when you enter the workforce!
Further expand your social circle through fun events organised by the various student clubs. Who knows—you might meet someone special in one of them, too!
