Bored after the N-Level or O-Level Exams? It probably feels surreal that it’s all over, secondary school, homework, CCA. After 4 to 5 years of hard work and finally, no commitments or responsibilities at all. Time to catch up with all the Netflix or K-dramas you’ve been missing out on! However, if you’ve run out of that too, read this article on how you can spend your time more wisely before the next phase of your life.
1. ‘Marie Kondo’ your room
Inevitably, your room will be a mess after studying for a major examination. So, time to have a room makeover — give yourself a new space & environment for the next phase of your life. You spend half of your time in there, it’s important that the space you have is clean and comfy. For those unaware of Marie Kondo is, she is a Japanese organising consultant also known as a ‘professional clutter buster’. Her tagline is “Does it spark joy?” If the answer is no, throw the item out. If yes, keep it!
Now, don’t just dump whatever that no longer sparks joy anymore. Find more sustainable ways to get rid of it. Recycle those old textbooks and worksheets. Find donation drives or charities where you can give away your items. If you want to earn some cash, you can always sell your preloved items on platforms like ‘Carousell’ — just make sure it’s still in good condition. Always remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
2. Get a part-time job
Many of you are probably ready to go out and enjoy after your examinations but knowing that one cup of coffee costs almost $10, it will burn a hole in your pocket. Given the long break, now is the perfect time for you to seek part-time jobs. This is an excellent opportunity to step foot into the working life and experience it. Working in the real world will help build up your various skills regardless of what industry you choose. It’s also good to start earning money, hence learning its value and how tough it is to earn. Nowadays, many online platforms make job-seeking and the application process easy, such as ‘FastJobs’ or ‘JobCentral’. Start writing your resume now and apply for jobs.
3. Be a volunteer
Take this time to give back to society and help make it a better place one step at a time. There are many organisations that are seeking volunteers. Research thoroughly on the different organisations and find one most suitable for you. You can scroll through websites such as https://www.volunteer.gov.sg to find one that interests you. It’s important to one that you are passionate or interested in; this allows you to be more empathetic towards the work. Your time as a volunteer will definitely be a fulfilling experience that will teach you many great lessons and skills. Grab a friend along, the more the merrier. Remember to volunteer with an open heart and mind!
4. Learn a new skill & upgrade yourself
Here’s your chance to pick up a new skill, something you’ve always had an interest in but never the time. Be it learning a new instrument or sport, picking up another language. Your life is a toolbox, fill it up with different skills.
Another way to upgrade yourself is through online courses. There are plenty of academies offering various courses you can choose from. It ranges from literally “How to cook the perfect steak” to “Investment 101” classes. Most of them offer a period of free trial, so you can give it a shot at zero cost. Some of the courses even award you with an online certification. Being able to gain new skills and knowledge in the comfort of your home is something we should make full use of. Having the right skills can also help build up your portfolio; it’s never too early to start, the future, you will be thanking present you now.
5. Enjoy to the fullest
You will never be a 16 or 17-year-old teenager again. After years of blood, sweat and tears preparing yourself for an examination, you deserve this break. It’s time to remove the heavy load off your shoulders and take a breather. Now is the time to have the freedom you’ve been aching for. Do something crazy and step out of your comfort zone! Enjoy yourself to the fullest before the next phase of your life starts — it may not be any easier but remember to always persevere.
