Posted on: 10th July, 2024

From the time he was a student in the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) to his current role as an Information Technology (IT) project manager, Thomas Seow’s path highlights how one can achieve significant career milestones with just a private diploma. Here, he shares insights about his educational journey in a candid interview with us.

Can you share with us about your educational background and how it shaped your journey into the technology field?

My highest qualification prior to my studies at PSB Academy was a Foundation Diploma with Kaplan Higher Education Academy and National ITE Certificate (Nitec) in Electronics (Computer & Networking) with the ITE.

I once thought getting a diploma was out of reach due to financial constraints and familial responsibilities. These challenges led me to enlist in the military and later start a technology career as an IT administrator with no experience.

How did your journey lead you to discover PSB Academy, and what ultimately influenced your decision to pursue your studies here?

Despite the financial constraints and family responsibilities, my aspiration to return to school remained strong. I first learned about PSB Academy through my Kaplan classmates. I chose the Diploma in Infocomm Technology at PSB Academy instead of continuing with Kaplan because PSB Academy offers a specialised programme that aligns more closely with my career goals and has a strong reputation for quality education.

Reflecting on your time at PSB Academy, what aspects of PSBA’s IT diploma curriculum resonated with you the most?

I like the programme’s practical approach to learning and its high relevancy to industry needs. It was well-structured, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience in the latest technologies. The lecturers were also knowledgeable and supportive, making the learning experience both engaging and effective.

I learnt computer programming languages like Python, setting up and managing computer networks, designing and managing databases, applying cybersecurity methods, and analysing business needs to design IT solutions. I also developed strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, all of which have prepared me well for the IT industry.

How did PSBA’s IT diploma add value in your job?

I’m currently an IT project manager. My daily tasks involve overseeing project planning, budgeting, and resource management, as well as communicating with stakeholders and addressing any issues. The diploma from PSB Academy provided me with essential skills in IT fundamentals, programming, networking, and cybersecurity. It also honed my problem-solving abilities, all of which have been invaluable in my role.

My future career aspiration is to work in the cybersecurity field. I’m fascinated by the constant evolution of cyber threats and the challenge of staying ahead of computer hackers. Ultimately, I want to be part of a team that helps organisations stay secure in a complex digital world.

Looking ahead, what are your immediate plans to achieve your goal of working in the cybersecurity field?

Securing my diploma was a significant milestone, but it is just the beginning of my academic journey. I choose to continue with a Bachelor’s degree with Coventry University at PSB Academy. due to the university’s excellent reputation, the quality of its programme, and the seamless transition from diploma to degree. In particular, the ability to advance directly to Year 2 instead of starting from Year 1 was a significant factor in my decision. The support and resources provided by PSB Academy also played a crucial role in my choice.
