Leadership: Leaders Are Not Born, They Are made

Posted on: 09th December, 2021

Whether it’s for a large international organisation like the World Health Organisation (WHO) or a local company, leaders provide people with a shared vision, purpose and goal. They give their team members the motivation they need to work towards goals. By exhibiting traits of courage, intelligence, confidence, ambition and empathy, they inspire others to emulate such qualities. They also represent the voice of the majority and communicate long-term plans of the organisation, events that could affect the way they work or live.

How do you become a good leader?

Effective leaders of tomorrow can no longer rely on paper qualifications but need a range of soft skills such as agility, empathy and the ability to recognise opportunities behind challenges – to be able to cope with the unknown. Several types of leadership styles exist but all leaders share a few main characteristics that allow the people they lead to be more engaged, happy and productive. Some leadership strategies that bring out the best in people include:

  • Facilitating open communication
  • Keeping team members engaged
  • Motivating team members to grow and explore opportunities
  • Being an encouraging coach, sharing knowledge and teaching
  • Setting clear goals and expectations
  • Giving clear and constructive criticism
Seek out leadership roles and opportunities

One of the reasons for pursuing a degree is that it opens doors to new and exciting leadership opportunities.

Joining student clubs and taking on leadership roles

PSB Academy, a private education institution in Singapore, provides its students with numerous leadership opportunities that allow them to be stewards, communicators and mentors. Through these roles, they can gain greater self-awareness of who they are as leaders, figuring out early what it takes to rally a team. PSB Academy’s student clubs span a range, from interest groups for music, technology and community services to international communities like the Chinese or Vietnamese student clubs. Immerse in your hobbies and interests, whilst learning to lead your fellow teammates. Through these rich experiences, you grow and can become a strong leader.

PSB Academy’s Leadership Development programmes appoint leaders to each student club, allowing them to develop their strengths and skills. Through the organisation of camps, like PSBA U-Nite, leaders and club committee members engage in activities that allow them to bond and be ready for the events of the year.

Career development workshops

PSB Academy’s career services prepare students for their future careers from the moment they start their journey at the school. With industry visits, networking, career workshops, industry-specific career talks and guidance from a mentor, students are given the skills and confidence to be able to handle internships and jobs when they enter the corporate world. Leadership skills are vital in the workplace in Singapore and when students engage in these preparatory workshops, they learn and understand what is expected of them when they embark on their careers.

Grow as a leader at PSB Academy
