Dispelling Myths About Private Education

Posted on: 23rd May, 2022

You must be wondering, if you choose to go to a private education institution in Singapore rather than a local one, would you be at a disadvantage, as compared to your peers who have enrolled in local universities? In a modern society that values qualifications, it is inevitable that such comparisons will arise, but how true are they? Granted some form of stereotype or two persists when it comes to private education institutes and their graduates, but it’s time we dispel the myths behind being private education institutions. Here are some of them that we would like to address and clear the air about.

You Can Enrol as Long as You Have Money

This erroneous notion could not be further away from the truth. As with any other institute of higher learning, academic standards in private education institutes here in Singapore are also to be adhered to in the spirit of being egalitarian and meritocratic. You might be able to afford the school fees, but if your grades do not meet the entry requirements of a course, you still won’t be able to qualify.

Private Education Institutes Are Not Regulated

This is another myth commonly heard. Private education institutes are subject to governance by the Committee for Private Education (CPE) under the purview of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). Established in 2009, the Private Education Act provides regulation and accreditation to private education institutions so as to ensure the provision of quality education.

In order to offer external degree programmes, schools are required to obtain EduTrust Certification. This helps to distinguish private schools that regularly maintain a high standard of quality in providing overall education services while continuously making improvements leading to positive student outcomes.

Riding on our sustained momentum from 2010 as one of the first private schools to be awarded EduTrust Certification by the CPE, PSB Academy is awarded Fourth Consecutive 4-Year EduTrust Certification in May 2022.

Private or Public University

Many foreign universities offering external degree programmes in Singapore through partners like PSB Academy are actually publicly funded universities in their home countries. Although these foreign universities are known colloquially by Singaporeans as “private universities”, it is actually a misconception of private education, since the Singapore government does not accord university status to overseas universities or foreign universities in Singapore.

Take for example, PSB Academy’s tie-up with the University of Nottingham, is a public university set up by the Royal Charter. Also, did you know that the University of Nottingham is part of the United Kingdom’s prestigious Russell Group and the Universitas 21 global network of research-intensive universities?
