Do you work in the sporting industry? We have good news for you: if you’ve been thinking of furthering your studies at the degree-level to upgrade your skills and credentials, PSB Academy now offers a new degree in exercise and sports science for you to do just that!
It’s the Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sports Science) awarded by Edith Cowan University, and we’ll be sharing more about the university and this newly launched programme below.

1) The field of Exercise and Sports Science is multidisciplinary
As a student undertaking the Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sports Science) awarded by Edith Cowan University, be prepared to learn a little bit of everything!
You’ll learn biomechanics to understand how the human body moves during sports, psychology to understand how psychological factors affect the mental health and performance of an athlete, nutrition to understand how diet can enhance an athlete’s sporting performance, and anatomy to understand the structure of the human body.
You’ll also touch on other branches of science and pick up skills in analytics and research. All these come together to mould you into a more well-rounded exercise and sports science professional, whether you’re coaching, personal training, or consulting. The degree also opens up opportunities to pursue further study; you can choose to specialise in fields such as physiology, strength and conditioning, teaching and academia too.

2) Edith Cowan University is one of the best universities for exercise and sports science
Edith Cowan University is a young but fast-rising university—it’s currently amongst the top 100 young universities in the world[i] and the top 100 universities in the Asia Pacific[ii]—and exercise and sports science is a field it shines in.
In fact, Edith Cowan University’s School of Medical and Health Sciences came in 21st in the Academic Ranking of World Universities’ Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments 2018[iii]! The ranking factored in criteria such as research output and international cooperation and looked at a total of 372 universities, making Edith Cowan’s achievement no small feat.
3) You will get to use PSB Academy’s well-equipped sports laboratory
PSB Academy’s STEM Campus has a dedicated sports science laboratory, and you will get to use the wide variety of industry-standard equipment contained within. This includes a rowing machine with an attached performance monitor, a spiroergometry system, an ergometer bike, metabolic carts, and more.
You’ll also be exposed to advanced software from key industry players such as VX Sports, which specialises in wearable athletic monitoring technology. You can look forward to learning how to use the VX Sports Training Load Tool and the VX Sports software suite!

4) The degree includes a lot of hands-on practice
The Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sports Science) ensures that you’ll get to apply what you’ve learnt through a practicum, as well as supervised work experience.
Both can be found in the course syllabus as compulsory core modules. The practicum is part of the Exercise and Sports Science Practicum module, and you will spend at least 30 hours at PSB Academy’s sports science laboratory. The supervised work experience will be part of the Exercise Delivery module, and you will spend at least 140 hours designing and delivering exercise programs to the PSB Academy community at the individual or group level.
You’ll get to see your work impact those around you, while acquiring valuable real-world experience at the same time, and we’re sure that your undergraduate life will be a meaningful one.

5) Edith Cowan University has undertaken world-class research in exercise and sports science
Edith Cowan University houses the Exercise Medicine Research Institute, a multidisciplinary and productive research team in exercise science that specialises in cancer research. The institute is known for their research on exercise therapy for prostate cancer patients[v].
That’s not all, however. The Australian Centre for Research into Injury in Sport and its Prevention—a joint initiative between Edith Cowan University and La Trobe University—is also one of only 11 groups worldwide to be selected as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Research Centre[vi]. As part of this arrangement, the centre will work on sports-injury and disease-prevention research and measures.
You can be proud to graduate with a degree from a university that contributes greatly to research for the exercise and sports science!
