Be it Biology, Chemistry or Physics; science has always fascinated me. However, Biology has always been the one that I was drawn towards. Since Biomedical Science was part of Biology, I decided to pursue it as my major. It offers many opportunities in the various life sciences topics, such as Microbiology and Clinical diagnostics.
I learned about the life science degree course at PSB Academy through social media and also knew one of my friends who took up the course. After learning more from my friend, I knew that the course was a right fit and would be able to provide the education that I wanted. La Trobe University (LTU) was also known for its life science programmes, and hence I decided to enrol into the course.
LTU’s curriculum included many aspects of Biomedical Science, such as Bioinformatics and Clinical Diagnostics. It also provides many different fields, such as Haematology and Microbiology. The vast number of various topics was what I liked most about the curriculum, as it provided me with ample knowledge on the different aspects and fields that would eventually expand my career opportunities in the future.
Currently, I’m working as a Medical Technologist in the Microbiology Lab at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. I perform various diagnostic tests on patient samples of body tissue, blood and fluids to help clinicians diagnose infections, monitor treatments, and track disease outbreaks. I also participate in quality assurance and quality control programs to ensure the reliability of our results.
My education at PSB Academy has provided me with ample knowledge and training that have greatly improved my laboratory and analytical skills through its theory and practical sessions. The practical sessions enabled me to have an edge over others as some do not have practical experiences. The Microbiology module also provided me with a lot of knowledge on the different microorganism and their morphology and gram stain patterns. Overall, the course had given me an advantage career-wise.
My learning experiences had been vibrant and dynamic with the guidance of my staff mentors and lecturers. The academy has provided me with adequate learning resources and space for us to focus on my individual and group assignments. Lecturers like Dr Seah and Dr Han have also inspired my learning. They provided additional learning materials, which were not part of the materials given by the academy. This has allowed me to learn beyond the scope of our course. They were also encouraging and never failed to make the lessons enjoyable and interactive.
Prior to my degree, I was led to think that if I enrol in a private education institution, it would put a dent in my resume. However, when I joined the workforce, I realised they were many others who progressed well in their career in which, and many of them were from PSB Academy. I believe private degree graduates may allow you to progress better than your fellow peers due to the potential head start and attaining a similar career progression rate.
I aim to work as an Application Specialist in the future, providing training for laboratory staff as well as establishing the set-up and testing for new equipment that could potentially improve diagnostic tests and hence improve patient care. PSB Academy still maintains contact with me, providing me opportunities to go for seminars and practical lessons, such as the recent gel electrophoresis session taught by Dr Seah. All these helped me hone my laboratory skills and continually expand my knowledge, allowing me to progress further in my career.
