Since young, I’ve been active in sports, and hence injuries were inevitable. I became interested in sports science as I wanted to help injured individuals get back to sports quickly and safely. Moreover, through my volleyball training in secondary school, I realised that sports performance could be improved drastically with proper training. This spurred me to pursue my education and, eventually, a career in the sports field.

I came across PSB Academy when I was researching for Sports Science Degrees to study after my Diploma at Republic Polytechnic. After browsing the modules and asking a few of my friends who had previously studied at PSB Academy, I decided to enrol in the degree. I was also given advanced standing and was exempted from the entire Level 8 modules.

The programme structure was well-paced. The first class often starts at 8 to 9am, with 60 to 90minute breaks in between to ensure we have enough rest to prepare for the next class. Contrary to what the masses say about university lecturers in private education institutions being just paid to go through classes and leave, PSB Academy’s lecturers are the total opposite. They engage with you fully in class and are always ready to render assistance, even when students don’t voice out. Their observation and willingness to stay behind after the lesson ended motivated me to do even better in school and at work —namely, Mr Khaliq, Ms Mariam and Mr Edgar.

Many might think that having a private degree will put your career at a disadvantage, but I believe in the current society, experience supersedes the reputation of the institution you came out from. The skillsets are what many employers are looking for now that nearly every individual has been through university.

The modules I took in PSB Academy helped me tremendously in my career. As a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Evolve MMA, I conduct classes and specific exercises that help to improve the performance of martial arts people such as Muay Thai, Boxing and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu while ensuring proper execution and technique to prevent injuries. I would constantly program the exercises and adjust the intensity to ensure it doesn’t become a “burnout” session. With the knowledge I received from the PSB Academy’s lecturers, I effectively guided people in their exercise routine. At the same time, also communicate efficiently and confidently, ensuring the fun factor is present.

In the next phase of my career, I hope to be able to use the knowledge I’ve gained from PSB Academy and the experience I have acquired over the years to help world champions in Evolve MMA reach their goals.
