Could you share with us your journey as a Police Coast Guard Officer in the Singapore Police Force (SPF)?
I’m currently a patrol officer in the Coastal Patrol Squadron (CPS). We patrol the straits of Singapore, particularly safeguarding the waters around Horsburgh Lighthouse on Pedra Branca, together with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). SPF PCG’s mission is to prevent, deter, and detect crime in Singapore’s territorial waters. Lastly, I’m proud of my job as it gives me a sense of satisfaction.
What was your most favourite subject while studying the Bachelor of Science Sport and Exercise Science (Top-up)?
My most favourite module is Sport & Health Nutrition as I learnt the importance of proper food intake, calories, dieting, and energy expenditure. I may consider furthering my knowledge in this field.
In what ways has your education at PSB Academy added value to your career and personal development?
Career wise, I have to maintain my fitness as this is one of the requirements in the force, so the modules I took made me more aware of my personal health and diet so that I can be more disciplined. In terms of personal development, I felt that this degree course opened up my mind and I gained more knowledge in Sport Science as I’m an avid swimmer and dragon boater. Thus, I’m able to put what I have learnt into practice and share it with others.
What would be your advice for students who are planning a similar career path?
I believe that it is never too late to continue learning. To all mature applicants applying for the Sport Science course, you have to persist through the full two years. It was especially challenging for me during my final two semesters as I had to juggle my course work with the SPF training. But with support from my classmates and much perseverance, I managed to complete them. In addition, the Sport Science knowledge you gain over the two years will definitely be worth it, whether you are going to venture into this industry or for personal knowledge or sharing.
Any quote that you live by or a quote that you would like to share with our current students?
It’s never too late to start learning and once you embark on this journey, do not give up and pursue it to the end.
