“Performing well in my studies motivated me to expand my field so that I can benefit my community.” – Mohammed Faheem Bin Mohaiyadeen Abdul Katheh Jailanei

PSB Academy – MENDAKI Scholarship recipient, Mohammed Faheem, shares his journey that led him to take up a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Coventry University.

What is your passion?

One of my greatest passion in life is to help others. I have always helped my parents at home by doing small household chores and it soon became second nature to me. When I was a teenager, I wasn’t the brightest student and I was unfortunately picked on. However, that didn’t stop me from helping others.

I also realised that I had good friends who consistently supported me, and I was motivated to work hard and excel in my education. I helped my peers who were falling behind in their studies by organising study groups. Performing well in my studies motivated me to expand my field so that I can benefit my community.

What are some of the challenges you face?

As my parents are ageing, they are not able to support my overseas studies for long. Furthermore, studying abroad incurs a lot of expenses. I also felt pressure from my peers who advised me not to pursue another field due to its job prospects.

What made you decide to pursue a scholarship?

I knew that university education comes with a huge financial commitment and I wanted to find ways to continue my education. While browsing for scholarship opportunities, I learnt about the PSB Academy – MENDAKI Scholarship through the former’s website. I feel that the courses offered by PSB Academy focus on what is required by industries and train students to be future-ready. I was also motivated by Mendaki’s cause to empower the Malay-Muslim community to excel in various fields.

I feel very honored and privileged to have received this scholarship. But at the same time, I feel anxious too as I must prove myself worthy of this scholarship, which helps financially challenged students like myself.

What motivates you to excel in life and studies?

I usually think about the efforts my parents put in to support my studies and I want to provide a better future for them. After graduating, I hope not only to be an engineer but also to give back to my community.
