Nur Ayuni Binte Yazid

Class of 2024
Diploma in Graphic Design and Media, PSB Academy

School of Business and Management

I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic with a Diploma in Business and went on to work full-time at Ernst & Young. While my career in finance was stable and promising, I felt a persistent pull towards the creative industry.

I wanted to build a strong foundation in graphic design while balancing my job. That’s when I found out about PSB Academy’s part-time Diploma in Graphic Design and Media through online research and recommendations. The course duration and flexible part-time schedule appealed to me, as it allowed me to study at my own pace while managing my 9-to-5 bread and butter.

At PSB Academy, I gained proficiency in essential graphic design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects. Mastering these industry-leading applications has been immensely rewarding. The hands-on experience I acquired is directly applicable to creative roles across various industries. I now feel confident in my ability to produce professional-level designs, a skill set that will open up new career opportunities for me.

Transitioning from finance to graphic design was a bold move, but it was a decision driven by passion.

For anyone considering a similar path, my advice is to follow your passion and make decisions based on what you truly want to learn. Remember that everyone’s personal circumstances are unique. Do not let others’ opinions about certain institutions or career paths influence your decisions. You are on your own journey, and you don’t necessarily have to follow the majority. Knowledge is valuable regardless of where it is obtained. Take time to reflect on your career aspirations before deciding where or what to study and how to enter your chosen industry as not every field requires a degree from a top institution. Practical knowledge, a strong portfolio, and work experience are often as important, if not more so, than theoretical knowledge. You need a balance of both to thrive in the long run—be both book smart and street smart.

Pursuing this course has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It has opened the door for me to transition into a field I’m passionate about, equipping me with the skills I need to succeed. If you’re contemplating a career change or further education, trust your passion and take action.
