Master of Science in Engineering Business Management,
Coventry University
Swe Lin Htet, who is from Myanmar, had big dreams. One of her dreams was to study abroad. Another dream was to become a successful businesswoman. Her first dream was fulfilled when she came to Singapore to pursue her Master’s degree. She is on her way to realise her second dream, as she is currently studying Master of Science in Engineering Business Management in PSB Academy. How did she come so far?
It so happened that after graduating with Bachelor of Science in Engineering in her home country and working in a construction company, she realised that being a construction engineer was not really what her heart desires. Instead, she wanted to become a successful businesswoman, who could develop a business and interact with people in the engineering field.
However, she did not pursue Master of Business Administration because she did not want to let her Bachelor’s degree in Engineering go to waste. So, she decided to research online for business schools that offer Master of Science in Engineering Business Management. “My ambition is to become a proficient businesswoman who can create a successful business and manage to sustain its development,” she said.
After attending various seminars abroad and consulting with study advisors, Swe Lin Htet was fascinated with the student life in Singapore, and decided to enrol in PSB Academy and our partner institute, Coventry University, in March 2019.
So far, her life as an international student in Singapore has allowed her to not only get a better education, but also see the world, find new interests and experience new cultures. “I started my Master’s programme in PSB Academy with strong passion and enthusiasm, as studying abroad has been one of my childhood dreams,” she said. “I spent each of my study days proud of myself by imagining how I would fulfil my future career and become what I want to be.”
Just like any other student, Swe Lin Htet had also faced challenges along the way, especially during the first few months of taking up the course. She elaborated, “At the initial stage of studying the course, I had some difficulties inunderstanding business terms and definitions since they are absolutely new for me. But Business Management subjects are quite interesting, and the lecturers are so proficient in each respective subject.”
She said that all her lecturers at the academy are excellent, and one of them has helped her significantly. “Dr Heng Aik Joo John, who is currently teaching Supply Chain Management and is a supervisor for my Master’s dissertation, can be regarded as the one who motivated me to complete my studies despite the challenges. During his lecture time, he was not only concerned about completing his lecture, but also encouraged his students to have good ethical skills rather than just education to interact between the business environment and daily life. I will never forget him as one of my life-giving instructors for my educational milestone, well-being and spiritual thinking”.
Besides dealing with academic challenges initially, Swe Lin Htet also felt nervous and worried when she started attending PSB Academy because she had tnd out that there is an Association of Myanmarese students. She then joined the club, and was able to participate in her favourite festival while meeting fellow students from her home country. “This festival that I participated with many other Myanmarese friends was the most memorable event during my time at PSB Academy,” she recounted.hought that she was going to miss the Myanmar New Year event, also known as Thingyan Festival, which is usually held in April. Fortunately, during her orientation at the academy, she fou
In addition to that festival, she also participated in various activities, where she met many other international students from around the world who became her friends. The activities gave her the opportunity to experience different foods and cultures as well. Furthermore, she finds that the career fairs held by the school regularly are useful for students like her to find out more about the jobs they are interested in and discover their inclinations, which help them to pursue what is best for them.
