Alumni Class of 2020
Bachelor of Biomedical Science, La Trobe University

School of Health and Life Sciences

Since young, I have had a vested interest in science and biology, and I hope to specialise in cancer studies and research to help improve quality of life and transform healthcare.

Through the recommendation of a friend, I was introduced to La Trobe University (LTU) at PSB Academy. I also understand that LTU is known for their life science major. Their curriculum was a well-balance of theory, and practical classes, which will prepare me for my career. On top of that, the two-year duration allowed me to graduate quicker.

Thanks to all the staff mentors who guided me, my campus life has been vibrant and dynamic. The academy provided sufficient learning resources and study areas where we could focus on our group and individual assignments.

Dr Seah, Dr Han and Dr Chon were some of the lecturers who have inspired my learning at PSB Academy. Learning materials were up to date and well-structured. The course started with the basic foundations before delving into specialised topics such as pharmaceutical, genetics, microbiology, metabolic biochemistry, clinical biochemistry and haematology.

PSB Academy honed my laboratory skills and techniques, analytical and research skills. All these have helped me to better adapt and perform in my current role as a Medical Technologist. PCR and analysing data are some of the practical lab skills that I often use in my current position.

Thanks to the all-rounded curriculum and knowledgeable lecturers, I secured my first job before my finals.

Briefly describe the Student Life in PSB Academy.

It has been two years since I’ve started studying at PSB Academy. I must say that the experience has been a meaningful and vivid one which makes student life more fun and enjoyable! PSB Academy has given me opportunities to attend various events hosted by the school and by the various student clubs. I participated in the very first beach clean-up and food packing and  distribution at a Family Service Centre. Other events I participated in include Le Grandeur Fundraising, which is a night with dinner, music and dance performances to raise funds for those in need and the less privileged in Singapore.

How have these events you mentioned enriched you?

It has taught me on how to manage events and the importance of managing my time on top of my studies. It gives me an open mind to be creative, implementing good teamwork and communication skills to both individuals and large groups. This is also my chance to give back to the community.

Share with us the most memorable school event you have experienced.

I would say the leadership camp, Le Grandeur fundraising and my first few events with Community Service Club have been the most memorable as they allowed me to meet new people from various backgrounds. They made these events most memorable and fun!

Share some words of advice with students who have yet to participate in any of our school events.

I would say never be afraid to be a part of student life as I’m happy that I did. It may be new and daunting at first, but it builds up my personal development – be it extending my network, making new friends and working on my life skills, while also adding colours to college life!
